MSE 2160: Elements of Materials Science and Engineering

Required Textbook: Callister, Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering: An Integrated Approach, 6th Edition

Although this is a service course for Mechanical Engineering sophomores, any engineering major students are welcome. 

Chen embraces several educational tools to foster active learning, including in-class clicker questions, online communication forums (e.g., Discord), think-pair-share exercises, and in-class DEMOS!

MSE 1800: Contemporary Materials Science and Engineering

No textbook required. This course is certified as a "First Experience" course at the University of Utah. 

This is an MSE/METE freshman course. We focus on hands-on experience, field-trips, and group study. 

MSE 5250/6250: Polymer: Recycling

Offered: 2023, 2025

This is a tech elective course for seniors and graduate students. This class includes hands-on modules on viscoelasticity, filament recycling, and related topics.

MSE 5050/6050: Special Topics: Polymers Materials for 3D Printing

Semester: Spring

Offered: 2024

This is a tech elective course for seniors and graduate students. This class includes hands-on modules on filament 3D printing, Vat Photopolymerization 3D printing, photopolymerization reaction engineering, and related topics.

MSE 5050/6050: Special Topics: Polymer Synthesis and Manufacturing Lab

Semester: Spring

Offered: 2026

This is a tech elective course for seniors and graduate students. This 100% LAB class has 10 lab modules covering chain-growth polymerization reactions, step-growth polymerization reactions, molecular weight control, polymer microstructure control, and manufacturing of composites and 3D printing.
